YouTube Hashtags: How to Keep Them Relevant
Use a small set of accurate hashtags and understand why more tags do not automatically mean more reach.
Hashtags can help describe the subject of a video, but they are not a substitute for a clear title, accurate description, or useful content. The goal is relevance, not filling every available space.
Start with the exact topic
Choose words that describe what the video actually contains. A tutorial about one software feature should not use unrelated popular tags merely because they appear attractive. A viewer who follows a hashtag expects the content to match the label.
Use readable phrases
Long, crowded hashtags are difficult to scan. Prefer a small set of simple phrases, and check spelling before publishing. Avoid creating several near-duplicates that communicate the same thing without adding context.
Keep tags and hashtags separate
Video tags are entered as metadata in the video settings. Hashtags use the number sign and may appear in visible text such as a description. They are different mechanisms, so do not simply paste the same unformatted list into every field.
Do not confuse suggestions with trend data
A generator can combine words from your topic and make consistent hashtag candidates. Unless it actually uses a verified data source, it cannot tell you which tags are currently popular, how many people search for them, or whether they will improve performance.
Before publishing
Ask whether each hashtag accurately describes the video and would make sense to a person exploring that term. Remove anything that does not pass that simple test. A shorter relevant set is better than an unrelated pile.
Use the Hashtag Generator to brainstorm options, then keep only the ones that fit your content.
